Thinking about the daily grind

Just getting up to Karphi on a daily basis can be a challenging start to the day, reminding us that there had to be good reasons for living here when the most extensive and amenable areas of arable land were a 40-minute walk away in the Kera valley and Lasithi foothills. Getting finds down is also difficult. In the past we have sometimes used mules, but the ideal excavator at Karphi is agile, with heart and lungs in good condition - and strong enough to help shift boulders and carry finds down on their back!
